Monolith

The monolith at the edge of the cliff was something Edward had seen before, but he couldn't remember where. Was it in that odd book he found in the town library, something on Elder Gods and this whole cult that grew around this place? There were scribbles on some pages, strange markings which looked like letters and numbers.
He knew that the townsfolk had repeatedly asked him not to get too close to it and never, ever think of entering that crack on the stone that looked like a doorway to a temple. And those markings, whirling lines on the stone which rose up to form a weird face like structure, wasn't less intriguing.
Was this actually a temple, of those Elder Gods that the book mentioned? Didn't look like much, was just a tall, large boulder. How could it house a temple inside? Or was this the opening of that sunken cave thing that he read about? Maybe he will find stairs inside, leading down into the main hall?
It looked ominous for sure, Edward thought. But it had something of a mysterious allure, which wasn't letting him walk away. Maybe, he could just walk up those stairs and look inside? What would he see?
